The English Speaking Union (Centre for Speech and Debate) The ESU has been at the forefront of debate in London's secondary schools since the London Debate Challenge began 6 or 7 years ago. They have some great experience and really useful resources for clubs and for the classroom in terms of debate. They also work on many other areas of English and cultural relations throughout the world.
The Access Project A charity helping bright students from disadvantaged backgrounds to gain places in top UK universities. Based at Highbury Grove School, Islington. A comprehensive and wide-ranging project which gives students supported opportunities to excel and to broaden horizons.
Holloway Saturday School Now a fixture of Holloway School. This long-running Saturday School is where KS3 students volunteer for extra classes, and socialise in a safe environment. Inspirational.
Positivo Mozambique A great project working with students in Mozambique. It gives them a platform to voice concerns and viewpoints through music and words, to do with HIV.
Friends of Bennde Mutale A charity run by Englishman Vince Mehers, who happened upon the small but beautiful village of Bennde Mutale in Northern South Africa, made friends there and decided to stay. He and his friends in the village have built a community centre and Vince teaches in the local school. Education, healthcare, amenities and life chances are far from ideal, so Vince and the other villagers have a volunteer programme and there are also ways to donate on the website. Take a look. It's a stunning area of the world.
The Jack Petchey Foundation A foundation serving London and Essex. Particularly keen on funding extra-curricular activities for youngsters. Fast and efficient, and not afraid to back a new idea. Without them, education in London would be very grey!
